I've supported linux on the ia64 chipset, the big difference is in the
bootloader.  I used the EFI bootloader for linux, elilo, to boot
Redhat linux (v7.1 and v9 I think, this was a while ago).

I don't really like the hardware, and I suggest that you try out the
amd64 processors if you're interested in experimenting with a 64 bit
CPU.
