[wplug] CUPS Printing - Just when I thought I understood it

I'm learning just how intricate the printing process is. My print
server (Debian Sarge/CUPS) has never "just worked", so I've learned a
lot trying to fix it... and lo and behold, there are a lot of pieces
chained together to turn what-you-see-on-screen into
what-you-see-on-paper.

Here's my understanding so far:
raw document -> CUPS filter chain -> CUPS backend -> printer

Can anyone explain the filter chain process? What is its input/output?
Where does the PPD file come in to this picture?

Thanks,
Dane
