I second Patrick, one item not to skimp on is the encoder.  Get a
Hauppauge Win TV PVR-250, you won't be disappointed.

Plus this card is tried and tested with just about all the homebrew
PVR projects.

It's basically a merge of Knoppix and MythTV.  Thanks to whoever on
this lug suggested that
