I thought this was a fascinating report:

Some interesting highlights ... after setting up a honeypot to allow
crooks to set up botnets and monitor their activity, they frequently
witnessed networks of tens of thousands of zombies connecting.  They
found hacked IRC servers specifically designed to control zombie networks
of up to 80,000 nodes.

Pretty scary.
