As a follow up, it appears it's Windows "Media Sense" that I'm
describing. Here's the registry hack information.

Are you sure you aren't just hitting some Windows stupidity? Windows
typically handles dropped network connections poorly, at least on the
consumer versions (Win9x, XP). On my XP machines if you reach around
the back and pull out the Ethernet cable it'll drop all TCP connections.
In my opinion it must be jumping to conclusions that you've lost the
network and won't be getting it back (surely not on the same IP anyway),
so it might as well remove all associated routes and connections. I've
seen the same behavior in dialup (static IP doesn't matter), wired
ethernet and wireless. You can confirm this by running a 'netstat -an'
in a DOS window while connected and right after disconnection. As for a
work-around, I don't know what it is as this rarely affects me. Surely
there's some registry hack or something.

man ssh_config tells you both the defaults for your distribution and how

to use the directives to change the behavior to suit your needs best.
