A long time back, I signed up to be notified when they (Google) were
giving out invites. It turns out that a friend gave me an invite the
next day. I only mention it because I got an invite from google just
the other day in response to my original request.

I don't think it matters too much anymore, I think everyone who has a
gmail account has some 50 invites. I think google did it this way just
to create interest.

As far as comparison to yahoo, I'm split. I think gmail has a better
interface, and you can definitely see they are putting time behind it.
However, yahoo has a fully integrated Calendar, Notepad, and Address
book, and you can sync them with external applications (Palm, Outlook,
etc).

That being said, yahoo's features always seem to come up a bit short.
Their spell checker doesn't work correctly with Firefox, and their sync
application needs a major overhaul in my opinion.

So to sum it up, I'd say Yahoo is winning the features race so far.
However, it seems that google keeps releasing more and more updates,
and their features work as expected. I use gmail for my personal
emails, and yahoo for the other stuff.
