For what it's worth, Wikipedia has a good article about top-posting:

I think an important point this article makes is that the unix/linux
community has a custom of bottom posts/inline posts.  So, it is common
courtesy to play along with the (arbitrary) rules of the community.

Also, RFC 1855 (the Netiquette Guidelines) specifically says:

    - If you are sending a reply to a message or a posting be sure you
      summarize the original at the top of the message, or include just
      enough text of the original to give a context.  This will make
      sure readers understand when they start to read your response. ...
