When I compile a kernel on Debian, I usually add a modifier via the
--append-to-version flag on make-kpkg to help me remember why (or when)
I compiled that kernel.

But I'm running into a problem. Every time I recompile the kernel, I
need to also recompile the nvidia driver wrapper piece (the binary
driver from their website requires some sort of intermediary code). I'm
thinking this is because I'm using the --append-to-version flag, so
what's already there doesn't match.

But it gets worse. For some reason, the nvidia driver compiled piece
isn't recognized if I switch kernels via picking another menu option in
grub. So I don't really gain the benefits of have several kernels
handy. Basically, every time I switch kernels, I end up having to
recompile the video driver piece again.

This seems very unnecessary to me, and I assume I'm doing something
dumb. Assuming --append-to-version is a poor choice of how to mark a
kernel, what's the right way?

Thanks,
Rick Reynolds
