That is correct, I have recently set up various mediawiki installations
and there is no need for mediawiki to have the root password for the
mysql server.
However, I am curious about the OP 's situation. What actually happened
to the mysql server? Were the grant tables changed?
Can the situation be re-created at will? Can logs be examined? More
information would help us track down how to correct media-wiki if indeed
it is at fault.
