OT: cdrecord & DVD burning (Was: [wplug] DVD compatibility)

The longer this thread gets, the more I realize I've been fortunate. I
bought my 'generic' IDE DVD burner (a "Digital Research" drive) on a
whim because it was cheap.

The only gripe I've had is with Jorg Schillings patched cdrecord for DVD
burning. For whatever reason, it requires some type of key to be
present in a configuration file. If it does not like your key, at 99%
it will say the burn failed. At first I thought I made coasters, but
after 3 or 4 burns the media was able to be read and seemed to match the
source. I remedied this by simply burning manually with 'growisofs'.
This thread has reinstated my curiosity. Does anyone know/understand
what the key system is all about?
