Debian GNU/Linux runs flawlessly on IBM Thinkpads and at least the HP 
nx9010.

If by "old enough" you mean "generic enough", go with the Thinkpads, 
they're usually the best supported, although people are running 
linux-based systems even on their cell phones these days.
