[wplug] Mutt is interacting badly with Xfce

I use mutt for email, and after a recent upgrade to Fedora Core 3
mutt is no longer able to tell when a folder has new mail. Mail is
delivered to a variety of folders by procmail.

There is a very strange symptom. I am using Xfce 4.2 for my
desktop. I only have this problem when Xfce is running. If I
check my mail from the Linux console mutt happily switches to the
next folder with new mail when I use the c command. I also do not
have a problem if I log into my box with ssh from a cygwin
terminal at work. However, if Xfce is running both of these fail.

I am using mbox format mail folders. Does anyone know how mutt or
any program for that matter determines that a mbox file has new
mail in it?
