I'm really not surprised at this, but I thought it was worth a shot
since it worked for me.

I'm running E "stand-alone" - not via gnome-session.  I'm still using
GNOME apps though.  Are you sure you are using GDM?  Any reference to
GDM in /etc/X11/default-display-manager?
