To handle higher peripheral densities in a speedy manner, ( more signals
and hardware-specific interrupts, common in a multi-CPU server), the
split-backplane is used.

Ouch! A $400 premium might be in order to make sure you get the right
machine. Like I said, Dell always tries to move you into RAID 5, dual
processor, dual power supply, SCSI, split backplane (not even sure what
that is) and pretty soon it is $7K. If I were confident which machine to
buy, I guess I would prefer to save the $400.

Wow, surprised to hear that. It all comes down to the account managers
you have. I love Dell, all of our servers are Dells (both at work and my
personal side business). Support has been nothing but amazing with Dell.
I personally hate CDW, mainly because of our account rep trying to take
us for every penny that he could.
What specs were you looking at? You can get a dual xeon for less than $3k
with Dell. They run specials all the time. If you want to contact me off
the list I can put you in touch with our reps at Dell, JDMI, or HBS.

Everyone has their own good/bad stories about different vendors. There
are a lot of different varibles. I know that if we had an account manager
at Dell, my experience could have been different. I am willing to pay
more for hardware to have the support that I want and that's why I use
CDW. My account manager is great, and I paid an extra $400 per machine
(over Dell's pricing) for this.
