There are no guarantees without trying, but to make sure the script
works try /etc/init.d/ssh restart. This will NOT terminate your existing
SSH session, so go ahead and try it. If you can still open another SSH
connection afterward, you know the script works.

As long as there is a symlink to it from /etc/rc2.d/, it should start on
boot. There may be quirks to your particular setup which would prevent
this, but on a normal Debian system it would work.

Do other things listed in /etc/rc2.d/ get executed on startup? Do you
have reason to believe that it wouldn't work?

Heck, you say that the only obstacle to being able to log in on the
console is that you'd have to take a few minutes to attach the keyboard
and monitor from another machine to it. Unless you have limited
mobility, this sounds like an acceptable risk...

...besides, if it doesn't work for some reason, you'll have to hook up a
monitor anyways to find out why. Some old systems won't boot without a
keyboard attached, so I'd probably reboot it with a monitor hooked up
just to be sure. Maybe that's just me.

Either way, let us know what you do and how it goes.

Chet
