[wplug] DVD Copies (Dual Layer?)

So my slick new media box has a dual-layer DVD burner, and I'd like to put 
it to use (all for legal means, thank you). I was wondering if any of you 
fine folks had a preferred method for copying a commercial DVD, preferably 
to a dual-layer disc, but I could deal with some transcoding and single 
layer if that makes it sufficiently easier. 

I tried vobcopy + mkisofs + k3b, but that made me a nice dual-layer 
coaster. Since the media is a bit pricey, I thought it best to do some 
research before trying again. 

Anyone have experience with this sort of thing?
