It's more of a licensing issue than a copyright issue.  You probably
don't own the copyright on the majority of software you use, it's the
license that permits you have one or multiple copies of the software.
This is true for GNU, BSD, and Microsoft software.  So you have to
follow the terms of the license.  Most licenses permit you to make
offline backups, be it to tape drive, zip file, or usb pen drive.

Sounds very cool- but why not just back up your data? Does making a
mirrored
copy of a non-open source application violate copyright laws?
