Yes, yes, every time I've heard an odd loud noise from my computer  it
has been the fans. I don't know how loud a breaking hard drive can get,
but I'm pretty sure a fan can be louder.

Nonetheless, I'd recommend buying a couple extra hard drives if you can
spare the cash and real-estate, and setting up RAID-1 with your old
ones. That way if your old drives are in trouble, you won't miss a beat.
