In my experience you RMA defective drives with the manufacturer,
assuming that you've had it more than a week.  They usually want you to
run their own diagnostic tool, usually boots off a DOS boot floppy or
runs on Windows, which typically does a SMART scan and gives you an
error code.  You then check the warranty status online, fill out the RMA
request specifying the error code, box it up and ship it out.  Then sit
tight for a few weeks.

The disk was in my primary file server. Since I had an identical setup
in
the backup server, I swapped out the drive and the cable between the
two.
In the backup server I'm going to try the long test and badblocks again
with a new cable to see what that gives me. 

Say the drive is bad, what information would I need to RMA the drive?
Should I send it to WD or back to newegg where I purchased it?
