This also happens when  "bad" media is put  into a (CD|DVD)-ROM drive.
Whereas MS Windows will typically either cope with the bad media using
proprietary kung-fu or hang horribly  using proprietary suck-fu, Linux
helpfully indicates that things are going  south for the winter before
locking up the IDE bus.
