Well, from what I've read and the issues you have, I really think that
scribus is what you want. I'll try to install scribus from source here and
see what it looks like. I'm willing to work on this with you just to see
what scribus can do. One of the really cool things I remember about scribus
is it's ability to creat PDFs to spec.
