[wplug] can't ppp after susupend

Hi wpluggers-
I have a Dell Inspiron 5000 laptop running Gentoo. I use a
Xircom combo card (eth and modem) for network connections.
After I 'suspend to disk' I must eject the card and
re-insert it to be able to start ppp (using "pon"). When I
re-insert, eth0 comes up, and I have to take it down before
starting ppp.
Does anyone have suggestions about how I might get the
effect of removing and inserting the card using a command or
script? I've tried restarting networks and hotplug, but
those don't have any effect. This is obviously not an
critical issue; it's only a matter of wanting to have
complete dominance over my computer.
Here is the /var/log/messages from when I re-insert the
card:
