Over the last couple years I've worked with Apple, Dell, and HP laptops.
The newer Apple products have definitely improved with their support for
Linux. However, I have had wonderful success running Linux on the HP
business laptops. HP seems to be taking Linux support pretty seriously
these days. Check out the nx5000. It's in your price range, weighs about 6
pounds, and you can even configure it with SUSE as the default OS if you
want.
