Ad-aware, at least the downloadable version, doesn't affect
performance, as it doesn't run continuously in the background.

The reason it doesn't catch all adware, incidentally, is the same
reason that limits the effectiveness of SpamAssassin (without the
Bayesian extensions)--it only catches particular programs that the
authors have already coded for.  It doesn't do continuous checking or
checking against a profile of "suspicious" activities.
