[wplug] Linux equivalent to FreeBSD's ppp -ddial

Hi,
I connect to the internet using a slow modem connection. With FreeBSD
I upgrade larger software components by connecting to the internet
with the "ppp -ddial [my provider]" command and then using "make fetch-
recursive". If I lose my internet connection it automatically redials.
The make command in the ports system will also try each file a few
times before giving up. This is nice because I can just start a
download when I go to bed, or before I go away for the weekend, and it
will run well unattended.
I'm also trying out Debian, and I've noticed that when I try to do
an "apt-get update" command it just fails when I lose my internet
connection. Any hints on setting this up so it can run unattended like
on FreeBSD? I'm able to track Woody ok via modem, but I would like to
try upgrading to Sarge, and if I have to manually restart every time I
lose my internet connection it will take me a month!
Thanks for any ideas you may have.
Mark
