Nate is correct.
You may want a persistent function - or alias,
as the case may be. In that case, you would modify
the startup script for your preferred shell.
That might be .cshrc, .bashrc, .profile ... all
depends on which login shell you use.
The startup script performs some wizardry to
modify environment variables and functions and
aliases and so forth, and then hand control to
you at the prompt, with the desired environmental
state intact.
