Sometime in March Brandon Kuczenski assaulted the keyboard and produced:

| I don't own a unix version of matlab and I've been a bit trepidatious to
| try Octave (is it of high-enough quality to replace Matlab?). As for
| OpenAFS, I've never been able to get it to compile for my homebrewed
| kernel (configurator script gives the error, "No available sys_call_table
| method"), and the Redhat versions don't work on same kernel. Of course,
| if I did a linux install on my desktop I would use Debian and so maybe that
| issue would go away. I guess I could also look into vmware, which sounds
| like a really neat concept.

we use matlab on linux here in the lab. the java front end is slow as a dog
and quite flakey (redhat 8,9 though not as flakey on 7.3). i've mucked
around with using different jdk's (or was it jre's --- i don't remember),
but i wasn't too impressed with it. we normally use java without the front
end (matlab -nosplash -nojvm), so the java stuff isnt really an issue.

octave is pretty powerful, depending on what you want to do. it doesn't
have all the functionality that the matlab toolboxes give you. this link to
their manual might help you answer some questions:

http://www.octave.org/doc/octave_toc.html

i really like the control matlab gives you over the figures, though i
havent invested enough time to determine if octave can do this.
