Try running cdrecord -scanbus once your camera is connected, it will probably tell you what scsi device you've got. Can't say for sure with gentoo/your kernel, but my camera shows up as /dev/sda1 automatically once it is recognized by the kernel - I didn't have to do any sort of mapping to make that happen.
