Just a few seconds after I sent my last post, I got DRI
working!  I had to rebuild the kernel modules for ATI. 
Which I guess wasn't done automatically by the driver
install.  I thank you all for putting up with my pain
and suffering.  I would like to thank total lack of
knowledge for my new baldness and loss of fingernails.
