[wplug] lilo issues

I'm guessing your previous installation put the lilo on the master boot record (MBR), whereas your new install is putting lilo on the partition.  The system is going to try to use the MBR before looking for a boot record on the partition.  Try changing the boot= line in lilo.conf to point at the device (eg: /dev/hda) so that it installs on the MBR.
