I have tried to compile my own 2.6 kernel, I have made sure that IDE stuff
is installed, I also tried with Normal mode, and compatible IDE mode for the
hard drive, but I get an error that says Linux can not find the root file
system on hda2 please use ROOT= parameter. I have checked under Linux with
the old kernel with df and it lists /dev/hda2 as / and I have in my grub
config file the following line under the new Linux kernel setup.

root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/bzImage ro root=/dev/hda2 hdc=ide-scsi
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.1.img

Yes you guessed there is no boot partitions also I don't really trust
partitions labels either. But I get back at boot time that it can not find
a root file system on the drive and this is what df returns when I run it on
the old kernel

/dev/hda2 490496 157916 307254 34% /
