The next step is to look in the "config.log" file in the source directory.  
Near the end of it, it should tell you what went wrong.  If you post an 
excerpt of that here, it will provide us more information.

Also, as an alternative to OpenAFS, you could look into arla 
(http://www.stacken.kth.se/project/arla/).
If you're running a recent 2.4 (>2.4.18) kernel or a 2.6 kernel, I think 
you'll need to download one of the 0.36 prerelease snapshots.
