That's because openGL is processing everything on your system processor and
not on the graphics card. If you update your drivers (nvidea anyway) or buy
a better 3d card it'll work much better. You'll also notice a considerable
difference in CPU usage on openGL screensavers too.

I have installed Linux (usually RedHat) on PC's with processors ranging from
130 MHz to over 1.0 GHz.  While almost everything has worked, one consistent
failure is with Tux Racer.  This game is always extremely slow to recognize
mouse movement and keyboard.  Anyone else seeing this?  By slow I mean that
a movement of the mouse takes 5 to 10 seconds to move the icicle cursor.
