I think you should be able to do this without using a framebuffer.  I
played around with resizecons and consolechars for a couple minutes
without success, but it's worth looking into.  Another promising lead
is to pass parameters to the kernel at boot time.  Take a look at
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/svga.txt.  "vga=EXTENDED_VGA" may do what
you're looking for.
