The problem there is that just about anything running X is going to be
running Gnome or KDE, and Gnome and KDE are going to have problems with
only 48M of RAM.

You can install other window managers, but that takes a little work.

Also, with that little RAM, you'll want to peruse your /etc/rc.d
directories and disable any services you don't want or aren't using.
I think both of these systems have GUI tools for doing this, but I'm
an old hat, I just delete the symlinks ...
