i have a computer here running redhat 9. i can run the configuration
utility (redhat-config-soundcard), and it plays the guitar thing nicely. it
identifies the card as:

Vendor: VIA Technologies
Model: VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller
Mdule: via82cxxx_audio

so after the test sound i hit "ok", and i can play wav files. now as soon
as i try to play an mp3, it might play a little bit (or nothing) then the
soundcard ceases to function. at this point nothing can be played until i
kill the esd process.

i've installed the mp3 rpms from freshmeat (xmms-mp3 and mpg321). does
anyone have any ideas here?
