I have to second checking out the video card. I had a machine that
started locking up randomly, usualy after boot up. After a fair amount
of investigation, the video card turned out to be the culprit.
Initially the problems occured only after the machine had been running
for some time, and when certain video operations were performed. So, I
switched the card out and put it in a headless machine that I had. That
system worked fine for a while afterwards, but eventually refused to
boot with that particular video card installed.

It seems from the discussion that the HD seems to be your problem, but I
wouldn't rule out the video card.
