	Well, one good thing is that the driver is pretty proven, so
that's likely not the issue.  Have you been able to try connecting this
machine to another switch?  Or direct to another machine via crossover
cable?  I've seen issues like this on certain switching devices - they
really like / really hate being forced to a speed.  Are you forcing
_both_ sides of the connection to the same protocols?  I have had poor
results leaving one side set to "auto" - especially on some Cisco
models.
