Good point, however I tried the cable on another machine and it did work
in full duplex.

An FYI, because I'm not sure if you're a wiring nut or not.  Just
because a cable works in half duplex does not mean it is a good cable. 
There is a reason why the color of the wires in a cable goes orange
orange green blue blue green brown brown.

The fraternity house I lived in for my undergrad had all of its wiring
done in the early 1990s when the campus was wired.  Unfortunately, the
only check done was to make sure that all of the wires matched up on
each end.  While this worked for 10 megabit, the subsequent upgrades to
100 megabit and 100 megabit full duplex required basically all the
wiring to be redone.  Mainly this was because of cross talk between the
wires.
