Samba isn't necessary, although it would probably be easier. You could also configure Cups to work with the Linux box and then install the correct driver on the XP box. Then in the printer properties on the XP box go to the ports tab, check 'standard TCP port', click on 'Configure Port' and then enter the hostname of the linux box, check LPR and enter the printer name as defined in Cups in the Queue Name. This at least works for me with FreeBSD and lpd, I can't see why it wouldn't work with Cups as it's using the lpr protocol.

Subject: [wplug] Shared printing
I am a newbie to linux, having just installed Mandrake Linux 9.2. I
have my other computers networked using XP Pro. and a Linksys wireless
router. Everything seems to be working fine except for connecting with
the shared printer. I assume I need Samba to have my linux work with XP
Pro. I downloaded Samba 3.0.6 and untarred it. It is in my home
directory and I would like to know how to proceed from here. How and
where do I install it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Jim
