Some other things:
Are these 2 boxes on a network on their own unconnected to other 
machines? the better for troubleshooting and to be sure there are no 
interfering influences.

You set:  wins server=192.168.1.1
Is this localhost?

I also have to agree with Bill, I think password server = * is unlikely 
to be correct. Please explain what you're trying to do with this.
