Sometime in April Peter Williams assaulted the keyboard and produced:

| This led me to try mounting with hpfs. Once again:
| fs type hpfs not supported by kernel
|
| My copy of man fdisk has some cautious things to say about
| OS/2. Am I just dealing with a drive and a dinosaur linux box, that
| are too far removed from each other to make this work? I'd like to
| believe that there's a solution. Plan B is to wipe the drive, forget
| what's on it, and start a new installation.

Peter.

I'm guessing it is ntfs. The folklore, as best I know it, is that IBM and
Microsoft tried to develop a 32 bit operating system together. After a
while they were not getting along too well and they went their separate
ways to make their own operating systems. IBM made OS/2 and Microsoft made
Windows/NT. Even though the operating systems are different, they have
similar roots. Consequently I believe they have similar looking file
systems. So it wouldn't be odd that an old version of linux would confuse
an ntfs partition for being an hpfs file system.

I havent seen this suggested yet, so I'll throw in my hat. If you can boot
off of a cdrom, try downloading Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.net/get.php)
and booting it. It does a really good job of detecting things like
partition types and stuff like that. If you like Knoppix, I understand you
can install it from the cdrom. If you need a copy of Knoppix and you are at
school, stop by and I can give you a copy.
