How do you think locate knows where everything is? :)

locate won't help until about 24 hours after installing the rpm, as the
locate database is updated overnight. (4am on recent Red Hat installs)
(Or it can be forced by running /usr/sbin/updatedb)

The -mount and -xdev options to find are helpful in the cases mentioned
where NFS is involved. (It's worse when afs exists.)
