If you just copy the files into the fonts directory, they aren't
automagically used. The link Carl gave tells you what to do to get X
to recognize new fonts.
For OpenOffice, run /usr/local/OpenOffice.orgX.X/program/spadmin as
root, then click on the Fonts button at the bottom. I think it will
let you install both Truetype and Type 1 fonts.
