Is your backspace working normally otherwise (e.g., at the command
line)?  If not, try 'stty erase <backspace>' (hit the backspace key,
don't type out "<backspace>") and see if that fixes things.

If it's only happening in vim, it might be that the backspace value
is hard-coded in.  I've seen this with other programs, and the easiest
solution seems to be to hit CTRL-h whenever you want to backspace.
