I have done some research on this topic.  All of these products provide the functionality (including free) that you requested.

I started with CODA (http://coda.cs.cmu.edu) which lead me to Inter-Mezzo (http://www.inter-mezzo.org) neither has been updated in a
while.  But, they have led me to Lustre (http://www.lustre.org) and Cluster File Systems, Inc (http://www.clusterfs.com) which is
supported.  BTW, they all have Dr. Peter J Braam in common.

I briefly tried CODA.  You might want to give Lustre a try.
