Russ, If you are using 'vim', Check for the existance of a .vimrc file.
This controls your personal options. Look for the 'backup' and
'writebackup' options and set them to off. From within vi :set will
show your current options. if both the options are turned off, no
reference to them will appear when you do the :set command(which is the
default on my system RH9.1). Writing the changes to the .vimrc file
will have to wait for another time. You can edit it by hand to make the
changes.
