I've just recently been using MythTV on my system, which is running Gentoo
Linux on an AMD Athlon 1.2. Of my time spent with MythTV, it's been great,
records shows very well, and can handle scheduling, and timeshifting of
real-time tv.

I've got it running with a Hauppauge WinTV-Radio PCI card. It's nothing
fancy. Though, I would check for support of the "btaudio" kernel module
before you buy a card. I have no qualms with the Hauppauge.
