I've used a Shuttle "all in one" and several cheap (like $12)
devices and depending on the distro all work equally well. I do find that
there can be issues if the device is not present at boot or three is
multiple interfaces - but all appear in the /dev/sd* family.
I have not tried on a SCSI box but I would assume that if your
distro / your config uses partition labeling (as opposed to using the device
node name) in fstab proper device enumeration should not be a great concern,
or if it's an issue do not boot with the USB device in place.
I was even pleasantly surprised to find my Shuttle XPC attempting to
boot from my USB keyfob - very nice....
