This happened to me recently.  I was running Debian, and I was upgrading 
piecemeal to testing.

The problem was that my old version of fileutils broke when I upgraded to 
glibc 2.3.  Upgrading to the 5.0 version of fileutils that comes with 
testing fixed the problem.
